A North Carolina Legacy
From a Carolina sawmill to a global name in fine furniture
Orphaned at thirteen, John Mathias Bernhardt found work as a logger, bought his own sawmill, and built a 20-mile log flume — the longest ever constructed in America — to move his timber. In 1889 he turned that timber into furniture, opening his Lenoir factory with twenty-five employees. Four generations later, his family still runs the company, and a portion of every year's profit is reinvested in their North Carolina community.

John Mathias Bernhardt opens his furniture factory in Lenoir, NC with twenty-five employees, built on the region's timber and woodworking skill.
1981
Bernhardt Design
The family launches its contract division, bringing contemporary office furniture and textiles to the architectural and design world.
